UPSET BY OFFSET

 

What happens to the cash passengers pay to airlines (and others) to offset their share of the carbon released by the plane? You might have thought the money would pay for a tree or two to be planted. Probably not.

Research by Unearthed - https://unearthed.greenpeace.org/2022/05/02/carbon-offsetting-market-climate/ - and just published in the Financial Times reveals that most of the cash goes to middlemen and very little indeed goes to planting trees. Why does that come as little surprise? 

Nor should it come as a surprise that these middlemen have an interest in maintaining the market they are milking. They are keen on increasing pollution so that people will purchase even more offsets to reduce the pollution.
