Do buy stuff with
a Fairtrade label. It makes a difference. But just what's the difference between Fairtrade and Traidcraft?
Fairtrade is a
scheme enabling small local producers to receive a fair wage for their product,
and for working conditions to be monitored and improved. It was founded in
1992 by Traidcraft, itself founded in 1979. While Fairtrade establishes
the standards that qualify goods for the Fairtrade mark, Traidcraft imports
goods directly from artisans and growers, distributing them equally directly to
shoppers in the UK and hence cutting out middlemen. Traidcraft collaborates
with growers and artisans, getting to know their needs and their ambitions. They work
together showing that trade can be different, and fair.
Most important! David Bowman, who lives in Hanborough, near Witney, is always happy to take orders for Traidcraft goods. He orders in bulk.
